“Self doubt is the anchor that keeps our ships from sailing.” |
Doubt is a natural part of being human and self-doubt occurs when we lack confidence or feel incapable of doing things we need to do. A certain level of self-doubt is good because it shows us that we understand what needs to improve in order to do a better job. However constantly giving into self-doubt can hugely affect life in a bad way.
Self doubt can stem from comparing ourself to others and it’s not unnatural to do this especially with colleagues or friends. What with social media making this so much easier these days, it’s easy to look at others’ lives and think that we are not doing as well as they are.
I doubt myself all the time, worry that I am not good enough in both my home life and my work life. I look on social media and see the busy happy lives of others and make comparisons to my own life. As the quote above suggests these doubts sometimes hold me back on doing things that I know will make my life better and help me improve my business. |
I feel in business there seems to be a constant pressure to be better, to create better products, deliver as much value as possible or to always try to attract more clients. It is hard to do this when you doubt yourself, doubt if you are good enough or if you are doing things the right way.
However what helps me is the knowledge that I am not alone in thinking this way and this is where social media and the internet is a good thing as it lets you see that others are in the same boat and you can discuss this.
The below tips won’t help remove self-doubt totally, but may help to navigate through the worst of it and help us sail forward instead of being anchored to one spot. |

You’re Not Alone
Everyone has doubts and fears. It can be very isolating to think that you’re the only one who’s not confident enough to make decisions. Chat to friends or family or join online networking groups to discuss your business issues. Tips from people going through the same things are invaluable. |
Ignore What Others Think
Managing other people’s expectations of you and your business is exhausting. Social media will always tell you someone else is doing better or getting further ahead than you. Ignore those stories, and don’t compare yourself to others. Besides, they often failed multiple times before finding success, so stop comparing yourself to that final success.
Remind Yourself Of Past Success
Self-doubt causes you to dwell on the negative. When it does, reflect on what went right instead, and focus on your achievements and not your failures.
Set Short-Term Goals
Future goals often take longer to reach, so when you’re not hitting those targets right away, doubt can creep in. Give yourself the credit of accomplishing short-term goals, and use those successes to keep doubt at bay.
